It’s always welcome when the harkening of spring is evidenced by the
melting of snow and lake waters working their way through the thinning
sheets of Nova Scotia winter ice…passing glances at the golf clubs
carefully stowed for winter are replaced with longer, lingering looks –
and it’s beyond my ability to resist…the putter comes out of the bag –
or a wedge – grips get checked – every shot’s for birdie standing alone
in the garage.
As you get older this rehearsal time gets short…January to April doesn’t
last
nearly as long as it did even fifteen years or so ago…and before you
know it
Master’s Weekend gives way to courses opening in Metro Halifax again and
we’re back at in earnest again…sadly – our Maritime Golf Season is not a
whole lot more than an extension of the preceding season – which
makes it all the more important to attack the opportunity to play with
zeal and enthusiasm, a thirst for meeting the courses you play head on –
and throttling the personal demons that dare to hold you back from red
numbers, or even par, or breaking 80, 90, or 100.
The golf courses need our help. If you golfed 3 times last summer – try
and get out and play eight or ten this year. If you golfed a dozen times
last year – try and get out three times a month. If you golfed 20 times
shoot for 30 – and if you golfed 60 – 80 times – if your game didn’t
improve – take a
lesson – and practice a little more. Is there anything better you could
be doing with your time ? Take the kids…fresh air, sunshine, a little
exercise, camaraderie and there is no more pleasant surrounding than a
golf course.
Enjoy your summer ! We’ll see you out there… Don

“ Every time I saunter down to the first tee I experience a little
rush – a little shot of adrenalin, a moment of anxiety and a healthy
dose of joy. Is today the day ? Will this be a game to remember or
simply a good walk punctuated, with frustration, elation, suspense,
competition and a laugh or two ? Whether it’s a fun game complete with
needling, a nose to nose character revealing match, or just an early
morning, stirring up the dew, golf will never let you down. It’s you and
the ball against the course and any other demons you choose to include
and at the end of it, it’s your job to find the reason that’s going to
bring you back….It is the perfect pastime – drama, romance, comedy, and
tragedy all rolled into one.”
Till next time – hittem long and hittem straight..
